Although depicting war, Guernica has become a symbol of peace.  By displaying the consequences of war, all of the horrible things that can happen, it has become an encouragement to society to stay peaceful.  In fact, a copy of the Guernica, albeit in tapestry form, hangs on the walls of the Ney York City UN building.  It strays from the original slightly, using various brown shades, and can be found at the entrance of the Security Council's room.  If that isn't a reminder to think twice before taking military action, I don't know what is.

The people of Guernica had sought to discover what really happened in their town, since they were told the damage was due to the Republican government, backed by the Communists.  Yet they know now the truth, that it was Italian and German forces supporting General Franco that did the bombing as a way to terrorize the people.  Today, Guernica's peace museum seeks to educate people about what really happened, since Picasso's work no doubt has many questioning what occurred at that town.  It has now become a center for encouraging peace throughout the world, with Picasso's art work no doubt serving as a reminder of what not to forgot, and what to never let happen again.
